As sementes de guaraná tem sido usadas ao longo dos séculos pelas populações indígenas que vivem às margens do rio Maués-Açú, na região amazônica. Os Sateré-Mawé, que se auto intitulam "filhos do guaraná", foram os primeiros a domesticarem a planta usada para produzir o Sakpó, uma bebida sagrada que é tomada coletivamente como fonte de iluminação para decisões que possam guiar a comunidade em direção ao bem comum.
Na cosmologia ancestral, os Sateré-Mawé são seres nascidos do guaraná. Do "olho" da fruta eles brotaram e se constituíram enquanto povo. Um de seus mitos de criação conta que Anhyãmuasawyp, uma mulher com características sobre humanas, foi fertilizada por uma cobra. Assim que ela deu a luz, seus irmãos se recusaram a aceitar a criança, expulsando mãe e filho de casa. Anhyãmuasawyp criou o filho sozinha. Certo dia, o menino decidiu voltar ao seu lugar de nascimento para saber mais sobre suas origens e acabou sendo morto por seus tios. Antes de enterrar o menino, a mãe, em um sopro de sabedoria, proferiu que de seu corpo nasceria um povo forte e livre. Em seguida, enterrou os olhos do menino na terra. De seu olho direito, nasceu a primeira árvore de guaraná e todo o povo Maué. Desde então, o guaraná é considerado sagrado em sua cultura.
Best known as the key ingredient in one of Brazil’s most popular soft drinks, the seeds of the guaraná fruit have long been used by the indigenous people who live along the Maués-Açú River in the Amazon Basin. The Sateré-Mawé, who call themselves "the sons of Waranã," were the first to domesticate the plant, and they used it to make Sakpó, a sacred drink taken collectively as an illuminating source of decisions that guide the community towards the common good. In their mythological essence, the Sateré-Mawé are beings born from guaraná.
From the “eye” of the fruit, they sprouted and formed themselves as a people. According to their creation myth, Anhyãmuasawyp, a woman with superhuman characteristics, was fertilized by a snake. When she gave birth, her brothers refused to accept her child, expelling mother and son from their home. Anhyãmuasawyp raised her son alone, but eventually, the boy returned to his birthplace to find out about his origins and was killed by his uncles. Before burying the boy, his mother, in a breath of wisdom, prophesied that a strong and free people should be born from her son’s dead body. Then, she buried the boy's eyes on the earth. From his right eye, both the first guaraná tree and the Mawé people were born, and the people have relied on the tree ever since.
